What, Me Worry?

Story by Scotty Gray.

The other day, I had to pick up our exchange student from school at 1:40.  I thought; pick him up, bring him to our house and get to my appointment by 2:00.  Doable… except, it was 1:42, 1:44, 1:46, 1:48, 1:50, 1:52… finally, at 1:55, he made it to my vehicle.  Trying not to be upset, or at least to not show my irritation, I was as pleasant as I could be.  I got him home, swapped keys, jumped in the Window World vehicle, looked up the address for my 2:00 appointment in the northwest side of green bay and…  oh no, it’s not on the northwest side, a couple of miles from my home; it’s over 6 miles away on the southeast side at…, wait: 3:00.  All that worry, for what?

The famous, fictitious mascot of the (historical) satirical magazine, Mad, was oft quoted: “what, me worry?”

Looking back at how I concerned I was over such a small issue, being a few minutes late, I was, like so many times before, reminded that life is so much more pleasant when we keep the small stuff…small.

Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, “do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

In Matthew 6:25, Jesus says, “therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”

…and in psalm 94:19, we read, “when anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.”

So, on this journey to our destination of timeless peace and contentment – remembering that this is not where our best life is to be – let’s remember that we can live a little bit of heaven, right now, right here because, to quote Jesus himself, “peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.

Do not let your hearts be troubled…”
